Parker and Lone Tree Dispatch Centers Implement 9-1-1 Program for Kids

Parker and Lone Tree Dispatch Centers Implement 9-1-1 Program for Kids

Every year, hundreds of thousands of calls are received at 9-1-1 centers across the country. The Parker/Lone Tree dispatch center has received over 7,000 calls this year, with many of these callers being young children who may be frightened and alone. Unfortunately, they are also unfamiliar with what to do and say once they have reached the 9-1-1 dispatch center.
With the growing need to educate children about 9-1-1, there has been a program created called "9-1-1 for Kids." 9-1-1 for Kids, Inc. is a nonprofit organization based out of California whose mission is to teach children how to save lives and property through the proper use of the 9-1-1 emergency numbers.
The program was implemented in the Parker and Lone Tree communities in January 2006 and has been received with much enthusiasm. The goal of the program is to teach all of the young children in the Parker and Lone Tree areas about the importance of 9-1-1 and how to use it if they have in an emergency. Children have the opportunity to practice calling 9-1-1 on a simulator designed for this program as well as watch a short "edu-tainment" video in which Red E. Fox takes four children on a fast-paced and fun-filled adventure, with stops at Telephone University, the 9-1-1: "Yes" or "No" Quiz Show, a 9-1-1- Communications Center and the 9-1-1 Hall of Heroes. Following the program, children will be provided information to take home and discuss with their families, as well as multiple goodies.
The program is typically geared toward ages Pre-K to second grade, however it can be geared towards seniors in a roundtable discussion format. Please help with this effort to educate the children in the community by scheduling a FREE presentation for your classroom, community or neighborhood organization! Contact the Parker Police Department at 303.841.9800 to schedule a class or for more information.

Winter Youth Basketball registration is Nov. 14

Registration for Parker Recreation’s Winter Youth and Kinder Basketball programs is Tuesday, Nov. 14 from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Recreation Center, 17301 E. Lincoln Ave.

Parents should plan to spend 15-20 minutes making team choices and filling out paperwork. Winter Youth Basketball is for kids grades one through eight who want to play basketball in a skill-building, recreational league.

Parker Recreation’s league emphasizes fun and participation, with every participant playing at least half of each game. Grade levels 1-2 and 3-4 play on coed teams. Teams are girls-only for grades 5-6 and boys only for grades 5-6 and 7-8. Middle school girls play in an all-female league in the fall. All participants must play in their correct grade level, regardless of physical size or ability level. Kinder teams are for players age four to six. Six year olds in kindergarten may play with the first and second graders in the winter youth league.

Team placement for youth sports with the Parker Recreation Department is conducted through an in-house lottery system. Participants register for the program at a specified date and time, and then they are placed at random onto teams. Parents will be able to prioritize team preferences on the registration form. The more options parents select on the form, the better the odds are that your child will be placed on a team that will work for your family. If all of your team preferences are full when your child’s name is selected, his or her registration will be set aside until the end of the team selection process. Your child will then be placed on any available team.

The Parker Recreation Department lottery system gives preference to Parker and Douglas County residents. The Winter and Kinder Youth Basketball seasons begin Jan. 2 and continues until Feb. 24. Youth teams practice once per week and have one game per week.

Registration fees are $70 for Douglas County residents and $75 for non-Douglas County residents for the youth league. Kinder teams have a once a week combined practice and game. Fees for Kinder basketball are $55 for residents, $60 for non-residents. Fees for both leagues include game shirts. For additional information about winter basketball programs, or to serve as a volunteer coach, please contact Parker Recreation’s athletics division at 303.841.4500. The Parker Recreation Center is located at 17301 E. Lincoln Ave.

Stonegate Mammoth Exhibit at Town Hall

Stonegate Mammoth Exhibit at Town Hall

The Town is pleased to invite the public to visit Parker’s new museum-quality Stonegate Mammoth exhibit. Please feel free to stop by Town Hall, located at 20120 E. Mainstreet during regular business hours from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday to visit the exhibit celebrating Parker's history.
This project has been in the works for several years. On July 15, 2002,heavy equipment operators for the Terrabrook development unearthed the fossil remains of a mammoth while excavating for a road leading into the Stonegate subdivision. They quickly halted operations and workedwith the Denver Museum of Nature and Science to remove the preserve the remains.
The Museum transported the remains back to Denver and upon further investigation determined that Mammoths lived in the Parker area from nearly 1.5 million years ago to 11,000 years ago, when they became extinct. This Stonegate Mammoth is thought to have lived about 200,000 years ago
Since the excavation, the Parker Mayor and Town Council, along with the Parker Landmarks Commission, has had an interest in showcasing this archeological find in Parker. Town employees were asked to work with the Museum to find a way to display the mammoth skull and tusk for future generations to enjoy. All entities worked together and the museum-quality exhibit was coincidently erected at Town Hall in May during Colorado Archaeology and Historic Preservation Month.
Town Council also hopes that local school groups, volunteer organizations, Town visitors and anyone else will stop by Town Hall during regular business hours to visit the exhibit. Please call 303.841.0353 for more information.
