Parker's Historic Hood House Needs Your Help

Parker's Historic Hood House Needs Your Help

The Town of Parker has stepped in to save the historic Hood House from demolition and has moved it to a temporary site until the final location and use is determined. This historic structure is in immediate need of a new roof and the Town is sending out a 'call to arms' for qualified roofers and/or cash donations to assist with this project. Because of its current condition, we will need to move right away on this project. Ultimately, the house will need a complete renovation.

If you are interested in participating, or would like to make a cash donation, please contact Susan Pacek, Comprehensive Planning Manager at 303.805.3337 or by email at spacek@parkeronline.org.

Built in 1911, the Hood House is one of the few remaining historic homes in the Town Parker and one of the only two that escaped damage during the disastrous flood of 1912.

Parker Recreation Center Youth Fitness Equipment Certification

Youth Fitness Equipment Certification

Beginning May 1, 2007 all youth ages 13 to 15 wishing to use the weight room and cardiovascular areas of the Parker Recreation Center and Parker Fieldhouse must attend a mandatory equipment certification class. Youth ages 16 to 18 are welcome to attend, but it is not mandatory for this age group. There is no charge to attend a Youth Fitness Equipment Certification.

Youth Fitness Equipment Certifications will be conducted by a certified personal trainer in groups of four or fewer. The class will cover basic weight room etiquette, rules, personal conduct, how to set up a weight program using Parker Recreation’s Cybex circuit equipment and proper use of all cardiovascular equipment. Please wear appropriate attire as you will be performing exercises on various pieces of equipment. Sandals and jeans are not appropriate attire.

To sign up for a certification session, stop by the Front Desk of the Recreation Center or call 303.841.4500. A variety of days and times will be offered. For insurance reasons, the Town of Parker requires that a parent accompany any youth ages 13 or 14 in the fitness areas of the Recreation Center and new Fieldhouse opening this summer. Therefore, we ask that a parent attend the certification class with their teen. Youth ages 15 and older are allowed to exercise without a parent in attendance. However, they must still attend a certification class.

Beginning May 1, youth ages 13 to 15 will not be allowed in the fitness areas of Parker Recreation facilities without verification of their equipment certification on their Parker Recreation identification or membership card. Don’t have a card? We will issue you a separate youth fitness equipment card which will be needed when you work out.

Please call Kim Bailey, Fitness and Wellness Coordinator, 303.805.3278 with any questions.

Online registration now available for Parker Recreation programs

Online registration now available for Recreation programs

The Town of Parker Recreation Department is pleased to announce the launch of it’s new online registration system. To register for an activity, simply go to www.ParkerRec.com and select Online Registration from the recreation menu in the left column. Programs available for online registration include our popular Tot Time preschool age classes, swimming lessons, adult special interest and art classes, and summer athletics camps and clinics. Information for youth and adult athletics leagues is posted online and registration will be available by mid-May for summer
programs.

“We are excited about the customer service element of this new system,” said Registration Coordinator Sarah Crawford, “Customers will be able to log on and sign up for classes in real time and will know right away if they are enrolled or if they need to make an alternate class choice.” The system will also allow Recreation staff to communicate more effectively with customers through an integrated email component. Cancellations and class changes can be made via email, and the system allows the department to communicate to customers about upcoming events and activities they may be interested in based on their past participation.

Online registration is just the first step in the implementation of a comprehensive new recreation management system. When the new Parker Fieldhouse opens this summer, the department will add components to manage front desk sales, pass management and facilities scheduling.

For additional information about the new system, please call the Recreation Center at 303.841.4500. Or, stop by the Recreation Center front desk and a Guest Services Representative can help you register at one of the new self-serve kiosks.

Readers Theatre Brings “Wit” to the Mainstreet Center

Readers Theatre Brings “Wit” to the Mainstreet Center

The Parker Arts Council will bring “Wit,” a Readers Theatre performance, to the Parker Mainstreet Center on Saturday, April 21 at 7 p.m.

“Wit” takes place in a University Hospital Comprehensive Cancer Center. The main character, Vivian Bearing, Ph.D., has spent years studying and teaching the brilliant and difficult metaphysical sonnets of John Donne and has been diagnosed with stage IV ovarian cancer. Much of the action takes place during her last few days/hours, as she reassess her life and her work with a profundity and humor that are transformative both for her and the audience. Flashback scenes to weeks, months, even years before are interspersed effectively throughout the performance.

Auditions for “Wit” will be held April 12 from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Parker Mainstreet Center, located at 19650 E. Mainstreet in downtown Parker.

Readers Theatre is a relatively new event used to introduce potential actors to a theatrical setting through interpretive oral reading with emphasis on character portrayal by voice or facial expressions with minimal costumes or props. These Reader’s Theater productions are being presented by the Parker Arts Council, with sponsorship provided by the Parker Cultural Commission and the SCFD.

The show is free to attend. For more information, call 303.805.3263 or go to www.parkerpresents.org.
